North York Women's Shelter

Every year in Canada over 362,000 children witness violence in their homes and on any given night, 3,491 women and their 2,724 children sleep in shelters because it isn’t safe to sleep at home.

North York Women’s Shelter actively supports the rights of women and children to build lives free of violence by providing non-judgmental safe shelter, advocacy, and a range of trauma-informed programs and services, including client-centred mental health programs and counselling. Our vision is a community characterized by gender equality where women and their children are empowered and safe. Since 1984, NYWS has helped over 11,000 women and children rebuild their lives.

Thanks to the Federal and Provincial Governments, in 2017 NYWS received capital funding to build a state-of-the-art, evidence-based, trauma-informed, anti-violence facility that includes a secure emergency residence and a community services hub. This new 24,000 sq. ft. anti-violence centre will be the first of its kind in Canada and construction is well underway with substantial completion scheduled for the end of 2019. However, the government funding we received for the build is only for bricks and mortar and we are relying on our generous community to help come up with the remaining funds to outfit and furnish the new building – that’s where you come in!

When you raise money for North York Women`s Shelter in this year’s Yorkville Run, you are helping to create a place of healing, empowerment and refuge for the many women and children who come to us for support. Your donations will help us open the door to helping more families than ever before. This is your chance to make history. For more information on our campaign or the build, please visit
